The AI-Optimized Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) system jointly developed by OSCARMAX and the Metal Industries Research and Development Centre (MIRDC) has been awarded the Silver Medal at the 2025 Edison Awards, marking a major achievement for Taiwan’s smart manufacturing industry on the global stage.
At the core of this solution is an in-house developed Adaptable Parameters Control (APC) module, which leverages AI to analyze discharge behavior in real time and automatically adjust machining parameters. This innovation significantly reduces dependency on manual tuning while enhancing machining stability and performance.
The system monitors seven critical EDM characteristics in real time:
Spark frequency
Peak current
Spark delay time
Open ratio
Current pulse duration
Average power
Gap voltage
In addition, MIRDC has implemented three types of real-time quality prediction models—including raw features, feature variation metrics, and AI-based model diagnostics—which allow the system to detect quality deviations and adjust accordingly, thus improving defect prevention and process reliability.
Key results:
Over 66% reduction in finishing time
Precision improved to within 5μm
AIoT integration enabling real-time global monitoring and production traceability
This award recognizes the collaborative R&D capabilities of OSCARMAX and MIRDC and underscores Taiwan’s growing leadership in advanced, intelligent manufacturing.
A full technical article will soon be released to explain the AI logic and practical implementation behind APC and its diagnostic models.
